Visitors to south east Sicily this May can soak up the island’s rich cultural heritage at two festivals and stay close by with villa specialist, soloSicily.
On 11 May the 54th Festival of Greek Theatre kicks off in Siracuse on the Ionian coast. This picturesque city is famous for its spectacular ancient ruins, which include an atmospheric Greek theatre where three gripping Greek tragedies – Heracles by Euripedes, Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles and The Knights by Aristophanes – are performed live on alternate nights until early July.
The second event takes place on 18-20 May in the UNESCO-protected city of Noto, which is prized for its Sicilian Baroque architecture including the imposing Noto Cathedral and magnificent Ducezio Palace. The charming Infiorata di Noto festival sees one of the city’s pretty streets, Via Nicolaci, transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour as local and international artists carpet the pavement with portraits made of flowers.
soloSicily has hand-picked three stylish villas in sought after locations, within easy reach of these cultural celebrations:
